Full of Grace

  • On a surprisingly 80 degree day and I had the luxury of calling work to say I won’t be in - I will be out. Outside.

  • Taking a hike with a friend and coming across this.* I am very grateful to know what it means to stand in awe.

  • Getting to spend a day in NYC, just me and my baby girl. I do not take time with my daughters for granted. What a joy they are to me.

  • Finding and riding this carousel, located between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.  I am giddy in love with carousels and this was a happy surprise to me.  A 1922 Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel. And the location was magnificent!

  • Enjoying a fancy brunch at a restaurant with great views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. Why is it that the fancier the restaurant, the smaller the food? I am very grateful that my desserts are not usually this small (and this was to share!)

*I am not on social media so I don’t marinate myself in negative, nasty political news.  But when I go out in the woods I feel a sadness that if we don’t solve our environmental problems soon I doubt Mother Earth will care about any of our labels. It really won’t matter if our politics are far right or far left, or the color of our skin, or who we love, or what deity we choose, or choose not to worship. We will all go down in the filth together.

  1. What a great photo of your hike - that is awesome! I am with you - I cherish times with the kids...

I totally agree with your last statement. We were walking somewhere the other day and they are sticking more and more apartment/condo buildings in all of the green spaces. Enough already - use some of the vacant buildings that litter areas.

Loving the weather... Not the stinkbugs :(

    1. Stinkbugs already? Ticks are already showing up here. It will be an interesting season.

  2. I just went off Facebook on Saturday morning because I couldn't take the mean-spirited crap that passes as political "discussion." It is Tuesday morning and I can already see a positive change in my world view.

    1. Almost everyone I know who is on FaceBook consistently (not just to see family photos, etc.) says how depressed it makes them. And I look at them thinking "isn't there an easy answer to that?" I just don't get it. I do fear that the next generation's entire view of the world will come from a computer device.

Happy to read that you have found a positive alternative.

  3. Have you been to the carousel in Greenport? My daughter LOVES it - we go on Sundays often, just for a couple of rides.

That waterfall is gorgeous - so glad you got to play hooky!

    1. I just looked up this carousel and was very excited to read that they have brass rings - it is becoming very, very rare. I have been thinking about a trip to Shelter Island, where I always went to summer camp. I will now definitely come in from the north fork!

  4. Is that a frozen waterfall just starting to thaw? Gorgeous. That we still have such beauty...

I'm glad the Bridge trip happened, it looks like it was a great time! Isn't it terrific that you can 'discover' a carousel -- you, who loves carousels and is from New York City, didn't know about this one? Amazing!
So glad you got to spend quality time with the kid... love that.

I agree with you, 8, about the ultimate costs of the degradation of the planet we live on. The planet will survive, but we may not. Which wouldn't be a bad thing, speaking for the rest of every. living. thing. We are the most destructive organism ever grown by the planet. We will poison ourselves eventually, ourselves and every other living thing, most likely. Hail the rise of the sulfur-based lifeforms!

    1. We didn't have much frozen water this year - lots of snowmobilers falling through thin ice. But even as beautiful as this waterfall is, we are told to boil/filter the water before drinking. How sad is that?

For as much time as I have spent in NYC, it still surprises me like little gifts I get to unwrap.

I so think that humans will pollute themselves to death and I always imagine all the critters who are left will stand and cheer.
