Full of Grace

  • Carol.  The movie opened on November 20th and it finally opened where I live this week. After all that cruel and unusual waiting, and all that suspense, I didn’t really like the movie. I didn't think it did a very good job of conveying the depth of the relationship (I didn't believe they were in love) until the very end and so the story didn’t feel believable to me. Or, as Martha suggested, perhaps it was just too hard to watch my pretend wife making love to another woman.  It was however, a very pretty movie to watch and I loved seeing the finely detailed New York City in the 50s.  And, of course Cate doing anything.  And now I have a new crush on Rooney Mara.  So I suppose I liked the movie but not the way the story was told.  (I would love to hear what other people thought)
  • Survived the chaos that is Christmas Eve with Martha’s family, complete with four 2-3 year olds, one of whom ran his dinosaur through a Dicken’s Village destroying quite a few buildings, a rottweiler who grabbed the whole turkey and ran, and a remote control drone gift that hit a couple of open liquor bottles which smashed on the floor, all happening with a decibel level comparable to a jet engine.  I love these people but wow, I am always happy to come home and decompress.
  • Enjoying our Christmas day traditions like eating way too much sugar, taking an afternoon nap, and sharing a roast beef and yorkshire pudding meal.
  • Winning a marathon game of Go to the Head of the Class.  We have this old (1965) version of the game and some of the categories are Army Insignia, battleships and sports (but the sports figures are all pre-1965).  It takes us a long time to advance classes.
  • Snow!  We finally have snow!  I will be sick of it by the end of February but right now I am as giddy as a little kid.

  1. That famly gathering reminds me of when my grandmother was alive and too many people crammed into her too small flat. (Aside from the turkey tossing T-giving, gatherings at her place my favorite holiday memories)

I haven't seen Carol. My son saw it a few days ago and he thought it was, "wow." Beyond the "wow" I think his sentiment is much like yours as he had glowing reports of the players (over the story.) I've tried not to read too much about it as I do hope to see it soon.

We have snow. Ugh. Yesterday we had the triple crown of weather, rain, sleet, snow and more rain. I don't normally wish for temps below 32 but in this case, with all the rain, best.

Glad you had a pleasant holiday weekend. Happy, Merry. :-)

    1. Yup, we have already switched to sleet and rain. Now it's just a mess. Yuck.

      Happy, Merry to you too!

  2. I would loved to have seen the Rottie with a whole turkey. Too funny, as long as it wasn't my turkey:)

Haven't seen Carol but do love Cate Blanchett. We watched The Man from U.N.C.L.E. last night and it was surprisingly good.

    1. The scene was reminiscent of The Christmas Story with the dogs dragging the turkey away. Fortunately they had planned a buffet and there was also a roast beef and a ham.

I will put The Man from UNCLE in my queue.

  4. Wow, your in-laws make mine look tame! Thanks for that! Decompression, indeed.

I love that your Go To The Head of the Class game is so... vintage! Historical, really. Gives an advantage to the moms, for sure. Although, by now the girls have probably played it enough to remember the unusual answers. Army Insignia?

I haven't seen Carol either, but some of the young lesbians that I read or follow are loving it. I think there just aren't enough gay movies for them to latch on to. It's important to be part of the mainstream occasionally, I guess.

As for the weather, you had to get some eventually, right? We have had rain every single day in December and a sprinkle of snow yesterday, but a big dry stretch is coming up. Whew! Rivers are high, hills are sliding...

    1. But at least I don't mind my in-laws'politics. They are just loud and have too many wild grandchildren and big dogs.

Wouldn't you know the insignia of a Brigadier General? One silver star. Yeah, go back two desks : )

Happy to hear your weather is drying up. Those landslides look pretty scary!

  5. I too was happy to have the house back! Ours was quite tame comparatively.
Our son is an extra in Carol and we were looking forward to seeing it with him, but it doesn't come here until the 8th. He did go Sunday night and was excited to be seen 4 times in the movie. He said the movie was okay - but his girlfriend said it was wonderful.
Yay for your snow - we still have rain...

    2. They filmed in Cincinnati where he lives. His friend was in a bit part and told him they needed guys with his build - so he went and was there for a little over a week - taking vacation time from his real job. We love teasing him about being a star! We are hoping he and his girlfriend can come up and see it with us on the 9th.

    3. Damn, I always miss the good stuff! Of course I probably would have been immediately escorted from the set for harassing the stars : )
