A Rose by Any Other Name

When Martha and I had kids we went by Mom and Mommy.  Easy.  As the girls got older they came up with their own nicknames for us, which they still use.  After they married, their husbands called us by our first names.  It all seems to work.

By the end of the year we will be grandparents to two boys. One grandson will have 3 grandmothers, so that's not so difficult.  But the other grandson, because his grandfather has had multiple marriages, will have 5 grandmothers.

Our daughters are asking what we would like to be called, wanting unique names to distinguish between this abundance of women.

So any suggestions?  Names you had for your grandmothers, or what you are called?  Any fun/cute names you’ve heard other folks use?

I’ll answer to almost anything, so all ideas are welcome.

  1. Picking a grandma name! How fun! My mom was Grammy. Her sister was Grandmam - which was shortened to Mam. My friend is Nana. None of these is original or unique. With so many grandmothers, you might be identified as Grandma InsertNameHere. Although, you two *should* have special names. Those other grannies can take a back seat!

Oh! My dad's grandmother insisted on being called Bonbon and she was called that for the rest of her life.

    1. I love 'Bonbon' but would be afraid of it being too suggestive for my waistline : )

  2. I'm Grandma to my daughter's two children. Colette to my husbands 3 grandkids (I didn't meet them until they were in their 20s) and Grandma CC or just CC to his great granddaughter. I prefer Grandma, but I'll answer to anything as well. It's all good. Congrats!

  3. I'm Gram to my grandkids and JB is BB. I regret not choosing Bam instead of gram, because I think Bam and BB has a nice ring to it!

Five grandmothers! Wow! I tell our kids they're lucky to have 3.

    Happy for you, 8.

    1. Someone told me that using a 'B' name was good because it was easy for little ones to say. Still, I am now leaning toward 'jammy' except that it might be confused with pajamas.

  4. My maternal grandmother was bigmomma. My paternal grandmother insisted on grandmother.. A FB friend is Bubbles to her grandkids. My son called me Bubba until he was 4. I will think on it a bit.

    What a glorious time! Congratulations.

  5. Nana is my favorite.

In the Philippines a grandma is called Lola which is nice.

  6. I'm laughing at "Lola". All I can think of is the song 'whatever Lola wants, Lola gets'. Actually, now that I think about it, it's not a bad choice : )

  7. My kids call me Mommle (rhymes with pommel) sometimes so I plan to go by Grommle when I get grandchildren. My grandmother was Gangeen, my sister's baby attempt at Granny. I'm not actually recommending with of those.

  8. My Scottish mother was called Nana to my daughters and when our grandson arrived they insisted that I should carry on the tradition. Lovely times ahead for you however you are named!
